Project 4: "Floor The Love -Battles"

                  competition

After a year away from Singapore, Korea Singapore Dance Project is back for 2007 with Project 4!

Man, it feels good because this time, I am actually going to BE IN SINGAPORE for it! And this Project is going to be the jam~

I wanted to make a dance event in Singapore that wasn’t a showcase competition because there are soooo many around already. Wanted to push for something new.

‘Battle Competitions’ are where 2 teams or 2 solo dancers take equal rounds on stage (or in a circle ^^ )  to compete to see who has the best flava. It is the usual format for Streetdance Competitions around the world and you probably already know of many such as Just Debout in France, Dance Delight in Japan and the bboy  Freestyle Session jam in the US

Well, I’m happy to announce I think is the first Battle Format competition in Sg in Project 4…. ‘Floor The Love-Battles!’

Check out the poster….^^

I made it myself. Very proud.

General

———————————————————————————-

Project 4: Floor The Love-Battles

Where: Oboxx Studio, Kallang

When: Sept 22nd, 2007.

          5pm - 9pm

What: 2-2 Locking, 2-2 Popping, 2-2 Hip Hop, 1-1 Breaking comp

Jury: 3 judges from ‘Next Level’ Crew, Korea.

Jin Ah, Freestyle Ali and Jinu

Judges Criteria: Costumes     0%          Crowd Response       0%

Make Up       0%          Rhythm and Timing  100%

———————————————————————————-

The best choreography and routines rarely win a battle format competition, simply because the judges are looking for the people who dance to the music the best in their sets.

If a person does a pre-planned routine, then the likelihood of that routine exactly matching the song that is being played is pretty small. It won’t score high.

But if someone freestyles to the music and in doing so, can create dance spontaneously in improvisation, and with real flow and technique, then that scores high. Example, this video, which has P-Lock (France) and Khan (Korea) in a Locking Battle in Europe.

So I hope that you all come and enter in Floor The Love-Battles, especially people who have been dancing for more than a year…..its time to push yourself to see how wide your dance vocabulary can be in matching the music.

To enter Floor The Love, go to the website http://floorthelove.blogspot.com and leave a comment on the blog. State the category you want to enter in (Popping, Locking or Hip Hop) , who your team members are and what your team name is.

Also….we are having Street Dance Workshops after the event as well! Click on the posters to enlarge them.

The judges are having a series of workshops at dance on us studios near orchard mrt. Full details at the website http://floorthelove.blogspot.com

There will be 3 classes for each style (Popping, Locking, HipHop, House, Wacking and Girls Hip Hop).

Cost:

1 class - $40

2 classes - $60

3 classes - $75

each additional class is another $15 more

Videos of the judges up soon, but you can see Ali’s battle video against Sally Sly from France here and a wacking show by Jin Ah here.

4 Da Next Level (cont)….^^

May 24th, 2007 by koreasingadanceproject

The final day for ‘4 Da Next Level’ was crazy good.

The top 4 from each category were to battle it out to see who was the best. And the field was high level. Even higher than a stoner after a Reggae Concert.

The judges had a very tough time in some of the battles and of course, there were controversial decisions, wouldn’t be a real jam without controversial decisisons~

But the judges seemed pretty cool with it..

Imgp1484_1

"We’re the judges and we cool with it." (Foreground: Stretch, DOn Campbell, Caleaf and Ken Swift.)

Hip Hop Winner: G-Haksu (NY Crew, Korea)

Imgp1687

Haksu battled Dong Hoan from W-Studio, Korea for the title shot. Haksu is one of the best in Asia. Here is a clip of him in the semi-final battle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8gjcpbMMlo

House Winner: Cebo (USA)

Imgp1689

Cebo from USA battled Ricky Soul from France for the House title. Here is a clip of him battling Naoki (Japan) in the semis..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckIY_ttFl-4

Locking Winner: Lia (Korea)

Imgp1691

Lia smoked Jimmy Soul (France) and Yuu (GoGo Bros, Japan) on her way to the title. That is freaking awesome….Korean locking level is damn high, J-Soul and Rei are really amongst the top 10 lockers in the new generation I think. The inals, Yuri (Korea) vs Lia (Korea) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IqtjN6Y1Cw

Popping winner was Gucchon from Japan.

Imgp1692

Gucchon is from Fab 5 Boogaloos, maybe the best popping crew in Japan. Popping J is from K.O.G.S (Korean Oriental GangsterS), the best popping crew in Korea. This is him vs Kyo in the semis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEBZLKP86k4

Bboying winner was Lil Bob (USA)

Imgp1690

You can really see how sad Naughty One is when Ken Swift raised Lil Bob’s hand. Lil Bob is from Killafornia Crew, California and it was his first time to Korea. He’s also going to Perth, Australia in the winter time. Jeeah! So for all my Perth peoples reading this, watchout because he took out Bboy Born from Rivers in the semis!

4 Da Next Level Solo Battle Results!

May 15th, 2007 by koreasingadanceproject

4 Da Next Level,

International Streetdance Battle

Seoul, Korea.

Next_level_079

The event was crazy. It was 3 days of high level streetdance in Popping, Locking, House, Hip Hop, Bboy and Hip Hop.

The venue was in Jamsil, "Special Event Area," its a mad big arena that can fit about 2,500 peopl and the place was packed during the event because it is a public area. The jam was FREE, so even old uncles and aunties came down to see what all the noise was about~!

Kif_9987

Judged by the Original Generation of those styles, it was reeeaallly spectacular.  Caleaf Sellers (Dance Fusion, Elite Force Crew, NYC) , Ken Swift (Rocksteady Crew, 7 Grand Masters, NYC), Buddah Stretch (Elite Force Crew, NYC), Don Campbell (Original Lockers, LA). Boogaloo Sam (Electric Boogaloos, LA) couldn’t make it down for the jam, but it was still the best judging lineup I have ever seen in my life.

Next_level_626

Buddah Stretch and Ken Swift

Next_level_622

Caleaf Sellers

I had entered the Locking Category, which was going to be judged by Don Campbell. Don Campbell invented the Locking style of dance. So, you know, like I was so excited to be able to show Don my locking style~

Before the Locking category, there was a Locking Cypher, with Jimmy Soul , GoGo Bros, Terry Wright, Stretch, iLL Cosby and a lot of Korean lockers and Don Campbell himself.

How can I descibe that Cypher? There was no funkier place in the world at that point in time. I got down in front of Don and Caleaf ><!

Next_level_867

Jimmy Soul from France getting down~

Next_level_962

Next_level_868

That is me on Terry’s right. I’m tying my shoelaces. ^^ The funky guys on Terry’s left are the Taiwanese Lockers. Freakin’ fuuunky!

Next_level_970

And here we have Yuu GoGo, from the GoGo Brothers, Fukuoka Japan.

Man, he can really get down. He must get it from his dad, Tony GoGo of the Original Lockers~!

muahaha. I wish my dad was an Original Locker…TT

Next_level_969

Yuu’s brother Rei entered the Popping Category for 4 Da Next Level.

Both are considered maybe, amongst the new generation of Lockers, maybe the best in the world. If not, then both are definitely in the funky top five.

Tony GoGo must be a proud daddy.

^^~~~~*

Next_level_890

Terrry Wright getting down, in that funky locking style~

And then, who decides to come in to the cypher? The Original Locker himself, Don Campbell!!

Next_level_875

To see Don getting down, it was a sight to behold. His movements were so pure, the original way of Lock dancing. This is the man who began to ‘lock’ his arms doing the funky chicken in his school cafeteria that eventually became the style we all love and practice today - LOCKING!!!

My entry was ‘A2.’ I think there were groups A through G, about 9 people in each group.  50 lockers in all competing to see who would join the Locking Battle Guests in the top 16. Battle Guests for Locking were ill Cosby (USA), Yuu GoGo (Japan), Elmo (Taiwan) and Ah Ka (Taiwan).

A2. That means I was going to be the second person out. Hahaha, at least I wasn’t the first. d>_<b I was waiting in the dancer’s area next to the ramp which the judges were going to walk down from for their big arrival.

Dom Campbell called me over. He CALLED ME OVER.

"Hey kid, now you got a pretty funky style."

OMG. Don just said I had a funky style.

"But what you got to do is slooow down. You’re locking too fast."

OMG. Don thinks I lock too fast.

"Lock at what you’re comfortable at."

OMG. Don thinks I’m not comfortable when I lock

He sat me down for 5 minutes to give me advice on how I should improve my style. He said that I had to slow down and do things at my own pace and to be spontaneous, play with the music. Be confident! I think he could tell that I try to do what I see other */ahem* high level dancers do (Khan, Woong, Moon from Originality) because, yeah, i do because they are my idols you know. Don said I should find my own feeling and own personality in the dance.

I took the chance to ask him about Locking history and what happened with the Original Lockers and other stuff. He told me everything. One thing in particular stuck with me..

"It’s not where you start from, it’s where you finish.’

Don was a poor kid growing up in the greater LA area. He never dreamed that he could leave the US and tour the world as a dancer, let alone at 56 in KOREA!

I took a photo with him and the other judges, of equal note Buddah Stretch and Ken Swift. The most highly respected Hip Hop dancer and Bboy in the world.

Judges_1Don Campbell, Buddah Stretch, Ken Swift and me at 4 Da Next Level.

When it was my turn, it was a song I knew and I knew it reaaaallly well because its on my PC. I went out, with Don’s advice in my head…"slow down….relax….be comfortable!"

I was nervous…each person has 40 secs to freestyle in front of the judging panel. But I really felt the music and when the spotlight hit me, I gave it a big locking pace. Hahaha….I guess it looked a little like this————–>

Next_level_512

Funky, right?

muahahaha.

I had no idea what I would do in my set, i just went with the music.

In this competition, if you do a routine, you don’t score high and actually, you would probably be disqualified.

Next_level_521

And after 40 seconds, it was all over and my friend Soh Hwa was next as contestant A3. As I walked off the stage (actually, I think I scoo-botted off), I realized that was the best I had ever done in a competition.

I had done it, I had got down in front of Don Campbell.

Word.

I didn’t make it to the next round, there are far better dancers than me in Seoul. But damn, it was a personal best! And Don helped me with some last minute advice, so it was all good!

Will post more later…on the 4 Da Next Level Afterparty~~~

^^

4 Da Next Level

4 Da Next Level, International Streetdance Championships

"4 Da Next Level" is a 1 on 1 Battle competition organized by ‘Ra’ who came to Singapore for NUS Hip Hop Night.

It has been his dream event for the last 2 years, to host an International Streetdance Event with the Original Generation Dancers as judges.

Judges

Surely this must be the best judging panel ever put together for any event anywhere? Don Campbell, the man who invented Locking. Boogaloo Sam, the man who invented Popping. Ken Swift, known as the best bboy in the world, Caleaf one of the first House Dancers and Stretch, the model for Hip Hop dancers everywhere from New York to Osaka to Seoul to Sydney.

And I’m going to enter the competition. I am honoured to be judged by such a lineup of people. Honoured and humbled. The contributions that these people have made is immeasureable. Without them, seriously, there is the most probable chance that I wouldn’t be writing this blog about Streetdance because Streetdance wouldn’t exist.

               Venue

This is the venue for the event, it will be in Jamsil, Seoul. I think about 2000 people will be there. Looks big…i think it the middle area will be filled with seats on the day.

But! Who are the other contestants I will be competing with I hear you ask?

Singaporean Dancers in Seoul

April 9th, 2007 by koreasingadanceproject

Because I’m such a popular guy sometimes people come to visit me in Seoul…><

Haha, well I guess strictly speaking they weren’t here just to visit me…here are some photos.

Sani - Definition Crew, Singapore

Cimg45391693

This is me and Sani rocking at Dong Dae Mun Stadium. Sani is a bboy from Definition Crew, Singapore.

He works as an F.A. at SIA (lucky bastard) and how he gets to go global and occassionally, he drops by Seoul where I take him - where else…to The Ballerina who Loved a Bboy Musical~

http://sjbboys.com/vod/2team.wmv

Peep this video~

It is a 90min ‘dancical’, no words, just dance about a ballerina who falls in love with a bboy. The premise is simple, but the show is really standout. Popping, Locking, House, Hip Hop, Ballet, Jazz and of course, Breaking were all in the show.

Bgirl: "Need a hand?"

Bboy: "No thanks, I’m good."

After the show, Sani took a photo with the lead Ballerina. ^^

He looks so happy, right?

Sylvin and Trinity~ ^^

Sylvin and Trinity are two dancers from JB who came last Autumn for a month of training. It was quite random, Trinity pretty much messaged me and asked about Korea and then came 5 days later. I am glad she messaged me though..

1968155170            This is what a Sylvin and Trinity look like.

Actually, when Sylvin got here, many people thought she looked like JANG Na Ra, a Korean singer.

Jang_nara5664

Kif_86243471

I had to organize their training schedule and even their accomodation because they had noooo idea about either. Wow, it’s lucky my job gives me a lot of free time ;P

So, I found them the best matching dancers available at that time to teach Girls Hip Hop, Hip Hop, Wacking and African.

Kif_86631465              From Left to right, it is Sylvin (MY) Jin Ah (KR), Yu Jin (KR), Trinity (MY) and Ji Hye (KR)

Kif_87115459  Here are the girls at the end of their training in a nightclub in Hong Dae…haha, it was so much fun. They made a lot of friends in Korea while they were here…..we all miss them a lot. Especially Jin Ah, she was so happy to have foreign friends~ ^^

Funkstyle Foundations

April 9th, 2007 by koreasingadanceproject

I’m so happy. Even more happy than this guy:

Happy_cat I achieved it. One of the goals of my life was to meet the man who invented the Locking style of dance.

That’s right, I met the man who invented Locking. Not one of the first dancers of the locking style , not one of the people who began to lock in Japan and are given over-rated props, but actually the original  - old school - original generation Locker himself, Don Campbell.

It was a rainy Saturday afternoon and I had just finished work at 4.30pm and Ali calls me up and asks

Ali: "Chris, are you going to Campbellock’s class?!"

Me: "Hunh? What you talking about man?"

Ali: "Boogaloo Sam and Don Campbell are having a class in Seolleung today."

Me: "WTF? I didn’t know, shizz man, kapshidah yo~ (yes, let us go)"

Ali by the way, here is what Ali looks like. He entered a 1-1 Locking Battle competition at W Studio in Yeoksam.

Not only had I the chance to meet Don Campbell and Boogaloo Sam. Now who is Boogaloo Sam you ask?  Straight up, the man INVENTED Popping.

Omg_cat

That’s right, there you have it. BAM, just minding my own business, about to go to practice at Song Pa studio after work as usual when my man Freestyle Ali calls me up to meet the man who invented Locking and the man who invented Popping.

Boogaloo Sam invented the Popping style of dance in Fresno, California in the 1970s. He passed on the style to hios brother Popping Pete and the two started the first funkstyle crew to what was to be known as the Electronic Boogaloo Lockers, later shortened to Electric Boogaloos because their manager said that Electronic Boogaloo Lockers was too long to fit on a billing board for a theatre. True~! ^^

Boogaloo20sam Don20campbellock

Left: Boogaloo Sam  Right: Don Campbell

Seeing the Original Style of Popping and Locking was…….i don’t know, how can i describe it?

It was . That’s how I can best describe it. Their flow, their actions, their character, it brought us back to how Locking and Popping really was expressed back in the 70s. Don is 56 years old, Sam is 49. These dudes are not young, but man, they can move.

Fresh, funky, flava…all these words are used so often these days to describe so many people, but when you see the roots, the real essence of Lock and Pop in the Funkstyle Cultre, you can see exactly the meaning that Campbell put behind "the point" and why Sam does a "walkout."

This is me sweating it meeting Boogaloo Sam.

Samandchris

Sam: "I am the King of Popping! You better recognize!"

Kif_93296309

Song Pa Family and Don Campbell, the original locker!

Sam had a question and answer time at the end of his workshop. Always the eager beaver for new knowledge I asked him straight up "What is the one thing that you think new dancers to popping need to know?"

And Sam said "Music! Straight up, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC!" He went on to explain what he meant in that, one shouldn’t get lost in the movements and try to perfect the executions without doing it to the music.

It’s pretty fundamental actually, but you would be surprised at how many people actually don’t have an ear for music. To prove his point, Sam freestyled one of  the best popping freestyle sets I have seen in my life, right there, not even 2 metres from my face.

Everyone in the crowd was like this:

Watchcat

Perfect musicality. He didn’t miss anything in the music.

I had the chance to speak with Don as well. He put a lot of emphasis on Character and being Spontaneous. Just make it up as you go along! He said that we should learn the movements and learn to be ‘funky’ with it. It sounds really ambiguous ‘to be funky’ when I write it here in this blog, but be assured, when Don Campbell looks you in the eye and says "be funky," you know exactly what he is talking about.

Bboy Unit Vol 9.

March 12th, 2007 by koreasingadanceproject

Bboy Unit Vol 9. Internationals

I went to BBoy Unit 9 Internationals last Saturday. Crews came from Canada, USA, Japan, Taiwan, China, France, Hong Kong and of course, Korea~

It was at the Seoul Olympic Weightlifting Stadium, about 3000 people turned up to it. For all you young people reading this blog, Seoul held the Olympics way back in 1988 when you guys were in diapers.

Bboyuniy

The Battles were tight, I actually agreed with all the judges decisions about the event, that is a first for me…haha. The judges had some pretty serious credentials, so no one had anything to say about being biased.

Judges -

Cross 1 - Bboy and Producer of Freestyle Session, the most infamous international breaking series on the planet. This man has been here since the 1990s and has helped develop bboying in Japan and USA with next level, RELEVANT events.

Woo Sung - Leader of Expression Crew, Korea. One of the most respected of the old generation of Korean bboys, widely held as one of the pioneers for innovation in the korean bboy scene.

Junior - Wanted Crew, France. This guy has a fake leg but still dances better than most people with two. His team won Bboy Unit last year.

Vartan - Flying Steps, Germany. Flying Steps was one of the best in Europe back in the 1990s and early 2000s. Widely known as a dope all round crew with power and style.

Machine - from Japan. Machine is one of the first bboys in Japan and rocks some crazy foundation.

_20070309024

Results:

Mind 180 - USA

Mortal E.X. - Japan

Rivers - Korea

Legistrom Obstruxion - France

This is a shot of the final battle between USA and Japan. USA has the original bboy scene and Japan, the oldest scene in Asia for breaking and streetdance.

_20070309019

USA had this bboy called ‘Caspar’ from Boogie Brats. Caspar is one badass dancer, that boy can move like serious. This is him in a cypher with Born at last year’s Bboy Unit.

http://www.youtube.com/v/PJo_mrp5O3U

Caspar is one of those bboys who can turn the tide of a battle I think when he comes out to do his set. So is Born, actually.

Rivers Crew, 3rd place at Bboy Unit!

Rivers

It is important I think to have real judges for an event. I really hate celebrity judges, you know people who are actors, or radio DJs or otherwise unrelated to dance.

It really shows no respect for the dancers and moreover, no respect for the culture behind the movements.

Thankfully, in Seoul, the streetdance scene has moved past having to use celebrity judges to draw a crowd or to encourage participation amongst dancers because there is the presence of knowledge.

Not that i have anything against actors or radio DJs or anything, but imagine if you got some random guy from the street and got them to taste Moroccan cuisine in ‘Cookoff Morrocco’ and be a judge. What is that guy going to do? How does he know what to look for? Brother has no idea! Conversely, can you imagine a Morroccan coming to Tiong Bahru to judge the best Chicken Rice? Man has never seen it before in his life, how is he going to judge the art behind the dish?

Judges are an important part of streetdance events. Always good to have more than one, helps if the judge is a foreigner too just to keep things impartial. Most important i think, the judge has to be someone who is a dancer too, or at least, familiar to a ‘T’ about that streetdance style. So if Sugapop from Electric Boogaloo Poppers were to judge a bboy competition, I would trust his opinion because I know he knows what is up.

This weekend, going to another event this weekend, a showcase event in Seoul…..

PEAS.

New beginnings~

March 1st, 2007 by koreasingadanceproject

On March 3rd, "Ra’s Dance Presents" will be having auditions for new dancers to join in the next Dance Project that Ra (he went to Singapore for NUS Hip Hop Nite 2006) is going to run in 2007.

Basically it is advertising for aspiring dancers to join our studio and family in the next dance project. No joining fees, no class fees, only if you have right attitude and confident in your abilities and willing to learn more, (and live in Seoul), you can audition. ^^

Here is the flyer..

_

And here is a picture of Ra…Dance_4134174

Ra is one of Korea’s most respected street dancers. He has been dancing since he could walk pretty much and dances locking, popping, house, hiphop and more. I first met Ra in October 2005 at his studio "Dance Studio" in Song Pa, Seoul. He organizes "Projects" in Seoul for gifted dancers and he let me train with "Hard Training Project," a dance team that trained from 11pm to 5am 7 nights a week for a year.

That’s right, they trained all night for a year. I only trained with them 3 times a week, haha, im so weak.

Ra’s Dance Projects are really famous in Korea, basically, he trains you for a year or so and let’s you use his studio for free everyday. The catch is, you have to train damn hard. You can’t be late, can’t miss practice and you can’t sit down during training!

Family

This is a pic of "Song Pa Family" as we call ourselves at dinner after a competition in Seoul - ‘Performance of the Year.’  (POTY)Bayabaya

Baya Baya - an entry in POTY from Song Pa

Funkyz

Funkyz - a locking duo from Song Pa Family at POTY

Ra put a lot of energy into training these dancers…i used to wonder why he did, because they never pay him, they can’t advance his studio economically, he doesn’t even act as their manager to get a commission from any gigs they do.

He does it out of Community and Love. That’s it. No other reason.

Ra is one of the most generous people I have ever met. Even when I first met him and went to pay for my lessons, he straight up refused payment and just asked me to come and practice in his studio for free~ ^^

He became a big influence when I started "Korea Singapore Dance Project. "Ksdp_logo_1

If you are unsure what the KSDP is exactly, check out this earlier post here .

Basically, every now and then, for the love, KSDP does a project that either benefits the Korean dance scene or the Singapore dance scene.

You might have seen

Project 1: Knu Funk Crew in Floor Skillz Asia 2006 in Singapore.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12C88egZJfA

Project 2: Ra in NUS Hip Hop Nite in Feb 2006.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVns8Pa0BKM

Project 3: Jay 1 HipHop/House/Popping in June 2006

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIAmJMqD6ow

Each project has something to do with Knowledge, Foundation or Love, which is what the KSDP’s steez is all about. I hope that each Project somehow contributes back to hometown SG’s dance scene, maybe someone is inspired by Knu Funk to take up breakin, or bboys already in sg feel inspired to train harder, i hope Ra turned some heads at NUS when he freestyled his entire way thru to only get beaten in the quarter-finals. YOu guys really missed out on a chance to see him battle, because he is one of the best in Korea. And I hope Ji Won’s students remember "Jacking" and "Lofting" and the other key foundation techniques to Hip Hop and House dancing that might be difficult to find in SG back in 2006.

So now, its 2007 and I called this post "New Beginnings." Well, it is a new year and directions for the KSDP are still being drawn up. I wasn’t going to share the bad news with y’all, but KIM Young Jin, a Korean Freestyle Dancer came to SG in Feb for some workshops and told ppl about Ji Won and Ra’s car accident. I wanted Ji Won and Ra to come back sometime early in 2007, but it’s not likely to happen…so be satisfied with Project 3.5 "DVDs" ok?!

You can get DVDs like this~isn’t that educational?!

So…errr…that’s it from this post I guess…i think i will update a lot more this year than last year. It will kind of be my New Year’s Resolution. Haha.

Peace

KSDP back for 2007

February 24th, 2007 by koreasingadanceproject

hi singapore~

chris in Seoul here from the Korea
Singapore Dance Project with some
news…first of all, sorry to have
ZERO updates since Project 3, Ji Won’s
hip hop classes in Singapore in 2006 ><

I’ll try harder to update more in the
future and hopefully, with better
news…

Ji Won and Ra (entry for NUS Hip Hop
night 2006) were in a car accident in
January. Ra is out ok, but Ji Won was
hurt badly. Actually, he is lucky to
be alive, he cracked his spine, but by
the grace of god he can still walk.
His eyes and hearing were also
affected from a head injury he
suffered.

He says hello to everyone and to keep
practicing, keep dancing and to make
yourself better. He will be in
Singapore again when he gets better!

You can leave a message here for him
if you want, i’ll make sure he gets it
because he can’t use the computer well
at the moment.

Take care of each other in 2007.

by the way, KSDP dropped some new
Dance DVDs from Korea into Singapore
over CNY..
